Season’s Greetings from AFA Benevolent Fund

Hope everyone is doing well! Another year has come and gone and we have had a full year of our new assessment process. The board of directors would like to thank everyone for their patients while everyone was slowly shifted from the old pay per member death to a monthly assessment system. At this time we have 1085 members paying which has kept the fund humming along. I would like to pay respect to our member who passed away this past year – Earl Watson (January), Bill Gray (March), Royce Brune (September), and Johnny Byrne (December).

For 2012 the yearly assessment will remain the same as last year ($36), if you pay by check or cash the payment is due by the end of January 2012. Also if anyone needs to update their beneficiary information, they will need to fill out a new blue card, please contact Eric Pederson at 512-922-4332 so a card can be mailed to you for your changes. If you have moved, changed your phone number or have a new email please forward that information to Austin Firefighters Association Benevolent Fund at 7537 Cameron Rd. Austin 78752 or call 512-441-7572.

A motion was made by Gary Pounds to raise the amount of money we pay per death. The motion to change the AFA Benevolent Fund bylaw, Article 16, to increase the payout from $5 per member (approximately $5400 at this time) to $10 per member ($10,800 approximately). If this vote passes we will have to change the assessment from $3 per month to $6 per month ($72 per year).

There was also an amnesty motion to allow a retiree who "retired from AFD and the Union in good standing (union member when they retired) to rejoin the Benevolent Fund if they pay their back assessments to bring them up to date. Look for ballots in the mail the middle of January.
